Nuclear Power Is Negentropic Growth
Throughout history, progress always comes with increasing energy throughput in the
economy. A major factor enabling this type of progress has been the transitions to energy sources with higher and higher energy densities. The general progression has been
from wood and biomass, to coal and coke, to oil, to natural gas, and on to uranium and
thorium for nuclear 昀椀ssion, with hydrogen for nuclear fusion next on the horizon. As illustrated in the table, with each of these steps, less and less fuel is required to provide the
same amount of energy.
Following this progression ensures negentropic growth, as increasing energy supplies can be provided with the same, or even lower, energy-of-the-system requirements.
For example, a 25-year program to increase electricity generation by expanding nuclear
power and phasing out wind and solar could double total electricity generation with essentially no change in the required raw material inputs.
