McKinley are from different eras, and delivered under
different circumstances, there is a moral and philosophical
thread that is common to all. America9s true role in the world
is not to wage war, take advantage of weaker nations or
exploit its own people. It is to act as a Temple of Hope and
Beacon of Liberty for all mankind. And that role for America,
the true identity of the American Republic, is rigorously
defined in Henry Carey9s examination of American versus
British economics.
One of the best examples which captures the Idea of
America that our Founding Fathers fought and died for was
written in 17784amid the Revolutionary War4by
Gouverneur Morris, later the author of our Constitution9s
Preamble. It is called Observations on the American
Revolution, and Morris wrote:
